Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you encounter situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really funny. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You question about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck suddenly, destroying entire villages in its wake. Buildings crumbled like house of cards, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were left beneath debris, their fate unknown. The Very bad scale of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to confront a future forever altered.
Rescue operations sprang into action, fighting against time and treacherous conditions to locate those still missing. The nations watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster became apparent, offering condolences to the affected population.
Awful Day Ever
It all started with my case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't figure it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was extremely running behind for a very important appointment.
I sweating. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was even worse. Everything. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
